AIML Project Ideas for BTech Students (Beginner to Final Year)
Updated
01How to pick a project
- Match your level, then stretch one notch. A finished intermediate project beats an abandoned advanced one.
- Use real data. Every idea below has a free dataset or API, so you never have to start by scraping.
- Make it yours. Change the dataset, the users or the language. The “India twist” ideas below make a project stand out from the thousand identical Titanic notebooks.
- Ship it. A README with results, a short demo video and a live link (Hugging Face Spaces and Streamlit Community Cloud are free) make a project count.
02Beginner AIML projects (1st–2nd year)
Goal: learn pandas, scikit-learn and the full train-evaluate loop. Each takes one to two weeks.
| Project | What you learn | Stack | Free data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titanic survival predictor | Cleaning missing data, encoding categories, logistic regression, accuracy vs F1 | pandas, scikit-learn | Kaggle Titanic |
| House price regression pipeline | Feature engineering, scikit-learn Pipelines, linear vs ridge vs gradient boosting | pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib | Kaggle House Prices |
| SMS spam classifier | Text cleaning, TF-IDF, Naive Bayes, precision vs recall | scikit-learn, NLTK, Streamlit | UCI SMS Spam Collection |
| EDA report on Indian public data (India twist) | Asking questions of data, groupby/merge, charts, writing up findings | pandas, Seaborn, Jupyter | data.gov.in |
| Devanagari handwritten character recognition (India twist) | Image data, a first neural network, then a small CNN; confusion matrices | PyTorch, torchvision | UCI Devanagari Handwritten Characters |
| Movie review sentiment analysis | Bag-of-words baseline, then a small neural model; train/validation splits | scikit-learn or PyTorch | IMDB on Hugging Face |
Learn the skills for these in the Python, data handling and classical ML sections of the Machine Learning roadmap.
03Intermediate AIML projects (2nd–3rd year)
Goal: real-world messiness (imbalanced data, deep learning, deployment). Two to four weeks each.
| Project | What you learn | Stack | Free data / API |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer churn prediction with explanations | Imbalanced classification, threshold tuning, XGBoost, SHAP explanations | pandas, XGBoost, SHAP | Kaggle Telco Customer Churn |
| Crop / plant disease classifier (India twist) | Transfer learning, data augmentation, a web demo farmers could use from a phone | PyTorch, timm, Gradio, Hugging Face Spaces | PlantVillage on Kaggle |
| Digital payment fraud detection (UPI-style, synthetic data) | Extreme class imbalance, precision-recall curves, cost-based thresholds | pandas, LightGBM or XGBoost | PaySim synthetic mobile-money data |
| Air quality forecasting for Indian cities (India twist) | Time-series features, train/test splits over time, baseline vs gradient boosting vs LSTM | pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch | Air Quality Data in India (Kaggle) |
| Customer segmentation with clustering | RFM features, K-Means and DBSCAN, choosing k, explaining segments | pandas, scikit-learn, Seaborn | UCI Online Retail |
| Semantic search over research papers | Embeddings, vector databases, similarity search, a simple search UI | sentence-transformers, Chroma, Streamlit | arXiv metadata (Kaggle) |
Fraud data note: real UPI transaction data is not public, so use a synthetic dataset like PaySim and say so in your README. That is honest and still teaches the hard part, which is the class imbalance.
04Final-year AIML projects (advanced)
Goal: a system, not a notebook. A good final-year project has real users or a real problem, is deployed, and is measured with an evaluation you designed. Plan for two to four months.
| Project | What you learn | Stack | Free data / API |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian-language sentiment or news classifier (India twist) | Fine-tuning a multilingual transformer, handling Hindi/Tamil/Telugu text, per-language evaluation | Hugging Face Transformers, PyTorch | AI4Bharat IndicSentiment + IndicBERT |
| Multilingual Q&A assistant for government schemes (India twist) | RAG: parsing PDFs, chunking, retrieval, citations, translation in and out of Indian languages | Docling, a vector DB, an LLM API, IndicTrans2, FastAPI | AI4Bharat IndicTrans2 |
| Pothole / road object detector for Indian roads (India twist) | Labelling data, fine-tuning YOLO, mAP evaluation, real-time video inference | Ultralytics YOLO, OpenCV, ONNX | India Driving Dataset (IIIT Hyderabad) |
| Voice notes and lecture summariser | Speech-to-text, summarisation with a local LLM, running models offline | Whisper, Ollama, Gradio | Mozilla Common Voice (incl. Indian languages) |
| Mini GPT trained from scratch | Tokenisation, transformer internals, training loops, loss curves, sampling | PyTorch, tiktoken | TinyStories (Hugging Face) |
| Web research agent with a cited report | Agent design, tool calling, planning and reflection, human approval steps | LangGraph, an LLM API, a web-search API | Any LLM API with a free tier, or a local model via Ollama |
Making a final-year project stand out
- Evaluate it. Report accuracy, F1, mAP or (for LLM apps) a small hand-labelled test set. Most student projects skip this, so doing it sets yours apart.
- Deploy it. A FastAPI service in Docker, or a Gradio app on Hugging Face Spaces.
- Compare approaches. For LLM projects, try RAG before fine-tuning and explain the choice. See RAG vs fine-tuning.
- Write it up. A clear README with the problem, data, method, results and limitations.
05More projects from our roadmaps
Every section of the AI Engineer roadmap ends with beginner, intermediate and advanced projects, from a NumPy MLP on MNIST to a production RAG system with evaluation in CI. The AI Engineer and Machine Learning roadmaps let you mark projects as built and track progress. For which project to do in which year, see the AIML roadmap for BTech students.
06Frequently asked questions
What is a good AI project for beginners?
A Titanic survival predictor or an SMS spam classifier. Both use small, clean public datasets and teach the full loop: load data, clean it, train a model, evaluate it and explain the results.
Which AIML projects are best for final year?
Projects that are deployed and solve a real problem: a RAG assistant over real documents, an Indian-language NLP model, or an object detector trained on your own labelled data. Include an evaluation and a live demo.
Can I copy a project from GitHub or YouTube?
Following a tutorial to learn is fine, but your portfolio project should be your own: change the dataset, the problem or the users, and be able to explain every part of the code.
Where can I get free datasets for ML projects?
Kaggle Datasets, the UCI Machine Learning Repository, Hugging Face Datasets and, for Indian data, data.gov.in and AI4Bharat. All are free.
Do I need a GPU for these projects?
Not for the beginner and most intermediate projects. For deep learning, the free GPUs in Google Colab or Kaggle Notebooks are enough for transfer learning and small models.
